I am heading up a national Task Force for HMA on FCN certification. this will be an option that FCN can select. HMA has a contract with the American Nurses Credentialing Corporation to develop a method of certification.

I would like to gain some insight as to how important this might be to any FCN and if so, how much a FCN would be willing to pay for certification.

At this time, I personally would not pursue certification. Perhaps as I hear more about the process, pros and cons etc I could change my mind

At this time in my life I would not pursue certification. One thing to consider is the number of Parish Nurses who are volunteer and retired. The cost of certification would be a roadblock for many.

Cost is being considered....and the Task Force has been adament about keeping the cost reasonable.

How much any FCN would value certification is yet to be seen. The positive thing about having standards of practice and having FCN recognized as a specialty is the visibility it gives to the role.

Nationally the healthcare system is beginning to tap into and value the connections between health and faith communities.

Developing a credentialing process has some hidden benefits in the process such as identifying how one prepares for the role. Currently we have everything from a weekend course to a course such as has been developed by IPNRC which contains specific areas of emphasis.

Keep the dialogue open...I welcome any comments both positive and negative.
